Animals in Research

Research Sheep Colony

Group: Farm Animals
Species: Sheep
Research Areas: Neonatal, Nutritional research

Sheep thrive in social groups of at least five members. Research facilities strive to design housing that best meets the needs of their animals.  This flock room is lined with hay that is changed every other day allowing the sheep to graze as they would naturally on a pasture.  Their hooves are trimmed monthly and their wool is clipped every three months to ensure optimal comfort and health. Mounted along the walls are large brushes, similar to something you would see at a drive-through car wash. The sheep like to rub up against them as they would a tree or a fence.
