A Boy’s Best Friend

Group: Dogs & Cats
Species: Dog
Research Areas: Duchenne muscular dystrophy

Duchenne muscular dystrophy is a debilitating genetic condition that affects 1 in every 3,500-5,000 boys born worldwide. Golden retrievers have a spontaneously occurring muscular dystrophy that is genetically identical to that of young boys. The similarities don't stop there. In boys and dogs the disease can vary from very mild to severe, affecting their muscles, hearts and joints. In fact, the similarities are so great that therapies successful in treating dogs can go straight to human clinical trials, giving boys hope for a better future and a cure. These dogs are truly a boy’s best friend!
